Faced with the entirely unsurprising news that S.C. Governor Mark Sanford had disappeared down to Argentina (It figures, yet another Republican in support of outsourcing) over Father's Day weekend for an illicit affair, I decided to go dig up his positions on civil rights for homosexuals.
Seeing if I could find some on the official SC Governor websites proved impossible, excessive traffic (shock!) has shut them down. I had to go to http://www.ontheissues.org/Mark_Sanford.htm to find something from him. They have a teeny little snippet saying he strongly opposes gay marriage or civil unions, and feels marriage should be only between a man and a woman, and he opposes adoption rights for gay couples.
Not really enough to go off of. So I headed over to http://www.sanford2012.org/ , which was just a laugh riot. Those poor guys, I'm sure Edwards supporters can understand what they're feeling right now. They haven't yet picked up or updated the site to reflect that Sanford admitted an affair, and are still attacking the "invasive liberal media" for criticizing Sanford's desire to "take a hike" on Appalachian trails so he can "clear his head".
Cue the Nelson "Ha ha!" laugh.
Looking at the first post on the site (there aren't many, and likely won't be more), it is dated 11/8/08 and talks about why Mark Sanford would make a great candidate for president. Also hilarious. Some highlights:
"The time is now to start rebuilding the Republican party. Despite what you might hear in the news, conservatism did not lose in this election. Conservatism wasn't on the ballot. With all due respect to John McCain, he was not the top choice of most conservatives, even though we did go out and support him after he became our nominee. The time is now for conservatives to band together and start thinking about who we will pick to run against Obama in 2012.
...
But Mark Sanford is also much more than a fiscal conservative. He supports banning partial-birth abortions and also voted for a bill that would make it a federal crime to transport a minor across state lines for the purpose of getting an abortion. Mark Sanford is against gay marriage and defines marriage as one man and one woman. He is also against letting gay couple adopt children.
...
Mark Sanford would make an excellent choice for conservatives in 2012. It's up to me and you to help spread the word, but we can do it. Please post on your own blogs, facebook, myspace, email this information to all of your friends, and link to this site. Let's do whatever it takes to help Mark Sanford be our next President. Keep checking this site for updates - and feel free to leave a comment as to why you think Mark Sanford would make an excellent President."
Great judgment again, conservatives.
So what's the argument against gay marriage again? It'll weaken heterosexual marriages? I'm straight and married, and I'm not threatened by it. Course, I'm happily married. A lot of these "excellent" conservatives who are threatened by gay marriage seem to also have some pretty bad marriages. Wonder if that has something to do with it?
